Letter from the Artist

My name is Ivan Prytula, I am a Ukrainian artist. In the past, I was a professional boxer. I graduated from the Lviv State University of Physical Culture with a degree as a boxing coach. I practiced boxing for 12 years, starting with amateur boxing — I was a prizewinner and finalist in international and national tournaments. In 2015, after a match with the reigning world champion at the time, I painted my first canvas.

As a child, I painted a lot. My mother kept hundreds of my drawings. Did I want to become an artist? Probably not. It was more something my mother wanted, as well as my first teachers and all those who saw my talent.

When I was exactly 12 years old, I painted an image of Jesus on a rather large piece of cardboard. I believe this image became my transition from childhood to adolescence, because after that, I became passionate about boxing and stopped painting.

But 15 years later, when I was going through a very difficult time in my life, when everything hurt inside, I bought my first canvas and dared to pick up brushes and paint. I painted a pair of horses on a yellow and blue background. They were sold while still wet — and that was the start of it all. At the time, I was 27 and I decided to start something new.

Since then, 10 years have passed. I’ve created over 1000 paintings, maybe even more. At 29, I quit boxing, left my coaching career, resigned from my private job, and fully dedicated myself to art!

My exhibitions have been held in:

  • Lviv, at the Square of Arts
  • Rome, Italy
  • Nova Zagora, Bulgaria
  • Kyiv, at the Museum of Hetmanate
  • Truskavets, at the Museum of History
  • Paris, France — October 2024

Today, my paintings are held in over 25 countries worldwide (and many have been donated for charity auctions supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine!) — both in Europe and overseas.

Currently, I have a solo exhibition in the very heart of Lviv, at the Museum of Ethnography, featuring 45 of my best paintings in my own unique style — Prytulism, which I invented myself!

Prytulism means “to lean into the human soul, to touch the human heart.”

In Ukraine, people call me the modern Van Gogh. I’ve remained true to myself and have deliberately rejected formal artistic education. I know and believe that my paintings will change the world and people — for the better!

The time will come when all the world’s top auction houses will openly sell my works, and my Prytulism will become known as a new style in the world of Art!

What matters to me is to convey the soul and touch your heart.

With respect,
Your artist, Ivan Prytula
Art will overcome darkness with light!!!
